The agenda for the Green Games Summit, delivered by Ukie in collaboration with Playing for the Planet and ISFE and sponsored by Sony Interactive Entertainment, has been announced.

Over 20 top level speakers from a range of backgrounds, including those within the world of games and leading environmental experts from outside of it, will take to the virtual stage on Wednesday 20th October and Thursday 21st October to inspire the industry’s conversation around climate change.

Highlights of the agenda include:

  • A session from Jonathan Baillie, Director of Conversation Programmes at the Zoological Society, about the status of the world’s biodiversity.
  • A discussion about planning for net zero within the games industry, chaired by Dr Trista Patterson, Director of Sustainability at Xbox, Josh Aslan, Energy Policy Analyst at Sony Interactive Entertainment, Xiao Wang, Programme Officer at UNEP DTU Partnership and Daniel Jacobs, Senior Software Engineer and Gaming Sustainability Microsoft.
  • An inspirational talk from Eyram Tawia, Founder of Letiarts, about the efforts being taken in the fight against climate change in Africa.
  • A joint presentation from Nicolas Hunsinger and Armelle André from Ubisoft about how companies and employees can work together to combat climate change.

Hundreds of games businesses from over 20 different countries are already signed up. The summit has also received additional support from the global games community, with trade bodies from across the world signing up as partners of the event.

ESA, ESA-Canada and IGEA, the Australian and New Zealand association, have recently joined a range of previously announced partners from across Europe, South America and Africa to ensure that the global industry is truly represented at the summit.

“We’re delighted to see both the range of incredible speakers at the Green Games Summit and the backing from the global games industry,” said Dr Jo Twist OBE, CEO of Ukie. “The industry has a critical role to play in tackling the climate crisis, one of the most important issues of our generation, and we look forward to convening crucial conversations ahead of the industry’s presence at COP 26 in November.”

“Over the last 12 months, we have seen an explosion of interest from the gaming industry as to how they can engage in the environmental agenda,” said Sam Barratt, Chief, Youth, Education & Advocacy at UN Environment and co-founder of the Playing for the Planet Alliance. “There’s been great progress on decarbonisation and integrating green themes in game play in the industry which we will be showcasing at the Summit, along with some exciting new studios joining the initiative.”

Simon Little, CEO of ISFE, added "With the European Union driving the global climate agenda, the Green Games Summit is a fantastic opportunity to bring together the global video games sector to exchange knowledge and optimise efforts of one of the world's leading creative and digital sectors to meet the EU's digital and green transition ambitions. We are delighted to be part of this global event.”
